I Think Our Kids Are Under Too Much Pressure to Perform Academically

I knew there was a problem when I got home early from work one day due to heavy rains shutting down our construction project. I was in the kitchen getting something from the refrigerator when our daughter came home from school. She was slamming doors and stomping around. She was mad and I asked her what was wrong. She started crying and told me about getting a bad grade on a physics test. She has always been strong academically, and this was a big deal to her. I told her that we would get her physics tuition if she wanted it. She already had a teacher in mind.

She knew she was not understanding her physics class as well as she should, so she was already looking for some tutoring help on her own. She could not get the understanding she needed with in-school tutors, so she started looking online for physics tuition and found a highly dynamic teacher that really helps a lot of students improve their physics grades by a full two-grade increase. She was worried she was going to get an average grade in physics, and that was unacceptable to her. We have turned our kids into competing athletes when it comes to academics now. I do not agree with it, but I can’t change the way things are either.

My wife and I enrolled our daughter in the physics tuition classes. She started making improvements right away. A discussion with her teacher about extra credit work to improve her final grade helped her to get the top grade she wanted. She had to ace every test and do the extra credit work to get the top grade. I never saw a kid work so hard for something. We are proud of her work ethic, but we also want her to just be a kid too. The pressures of academic life in school have me worrying about her all the time now.
