I Needed an Apartment in Florida

Monday, August 28th, 2017

I grew up in a very rural area. When I say in the boonies, that really is what I mean. We had to travel nearly 30 minutes just to get to our school every day or to a store like Walmart. I knew I wanted more, and going off to college in Salt Lake City showed me that I definitely prefer city living over country living. After graduating, i was hired on as a teacher at a school outside of Tampa, Florida. I looked at the surrounding areas and knew that I wanted an apartment in Brandon FL because of everything I had read about the area.

I was able to find a nice apartment rather fast, but that is because there are so many apartment complexes there that are nice. I had looked at about a dozen of them, and I knew that I wanted to live at Overlook for a number of reasons. First, the location could not be more perfect. It will not take me long to get to my job. If there is one thing that I have learned to dislike since living in the country, it is a long commute. (more…)

I Had to Go Check on Mom

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017

I got down here early this week and it was great to be home, but of course I had serious business to attend to. My mom had a pretty serious health scare and she is going to need some time to get back on her feet. I had thoughts about trying to get her to move up North with me or move in with my sister, but that is not really worth the effort. Instead we are going to arrange for in home care Hollywood FL She is already pretty feisty and told me not to bother ask her about the stuff that I am thinking about. It is not like I could not have guessed that. (more…)

We Found a Little Summer House

Monday, May 22nd, 2017

The place is on the inlet between Destin Beach and the town of Niceville. It is not exactly on the beach, but then that is fine with me. I would really rather be protected from a real storm surge. The place is nothing more than a cottage and there are about another half dozen of them quite close to it. They seem to be around ten or fifteen years old and it is obvious that all of them are used like we would use them. Right now we are getting quotes on homeowners insurance in Florida, looking to see what it would cost for us to have it either bundled with the mortgage payment or if we got it separate from that. The place is not going to be that expensive and obviously it helps us that we have paid off our own house. In truth we are thinking that it shall not be very long before it is time for us to get a smaller place.

The last of the children are going to be gone in a short time. (more…)

The Rain is Not Going to Stop Soon

Sunday, May 21st, 2017

It has been pretty much a monsoon since we got here and so we have not been able to get started on this project. All of my stuff is still waiting to be unpacked. There are four of us living in this house in a nice suburb. All of the stuff we brought along is in this sewa mobil box for Jakarta that we hired. That was a good thing, since we can not get the gear out of the box until we need to use it. Of course we are really worried about it. The stuff that we have in that box is very expensive obviously and the company would have a fit if it went missing on us. However the real thing is that we could not replace it in a reasonable amount of time and it might set this project back for a month while we had to sit around waiting for the stuff to get here.

The rain is not supposed to stop or even slow down for another week, but that is not certain either. (more…)

I Wanted to Get Life Insurance

Friday, May 19th, 2017

When my cousin was diagnosed with cancer, none of us expected her to only live for a few more months. She died right before her 40th birthday, which still shocks all of us to this day. She was the picture of health, so she had never taken out life insurance for herself. As a result, her husband has been struggling since half the income was lost. That got me to thinking not long ago that this story could happen to any one of us. I have my car insurance through the Niceville insurance agency, and I decided to talk with someone there about life insurance too.

Before I did, I went to their website to make sure that they even offered life insurance. When I found out that they did, I took my time reading all of the information about it. (more…)

Sometimes You Need to Learn What You Don’t Already Know

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017

People are always saying that there are employees who are natural born leaders. I have heard this all throughout life, but what frustrates me is that it is always held up to everyone as the only people worth anything are leaders. In the company I work for, I have never been a manager, and I know the people who make the most money hold those positions. I began reading leadership blogs to try to learn more about what it is that is necessary to lead others. I hoped that maybe some of it would rub off on me so that I could get a coveted management position one day.

I was never someone who likes to follow or lead. I just like to be myself. I always found it stressful to try to tell other people to do, and while I listen to others in the workplace, I also like to do things on my own. But this is not enough to make your paycheck rise to acceptable levels for today’s costs of living. I knew that I needed to do something if I wanted to rise up the ladder with the company that I have been at for so long. (more…)

The Only Way to Go with a Rug

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017

Until I discovered the wonders of custom designer rugs, I bought all my rugs at the local department store just like everyone else. I figured what is the big deal? They’re rugs. No one notices what type of rugs you’ve got inside the door or in the bathroom. They are all the same. How wrong I was. What if I was to tell you the difference between a custom rug and a mass produced rug was like the difference between night and day? It really is. You haven’t owned a decent rug until you’ve gone custom. They’re that superior.

Of course, buying anything that is custom tends to get a little pricey. I think everyone knows that. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a quality product without spending a bundle of money. (more…)

A Workout Designed to Be Tough

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I joined the local gym because I wanted to get in even better shape. I was not overweight, but I also wasn’t toned. Working out at the gym helped me some, but I was not pleased with the slow progress. The gym had state of the art equipment, but there was no direction really. No personal trainers were on site to help those of us who were not getting to where we wanted to be. Another guy at the gym told me about a Body Beast review that he had read, and he thought I might be interested in it after hearing me complain about my lack of progress.

I asked him if he was doing it, and he was up front about it being too hard for him to stick with it. (more…)

High-End Car Really Grabbed the Attention of My Imagination

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I am not likely to ever be able to own one, but the really top-end cars hold an interest to me. For example, it would be really cool to own a 2017 Bugatti. This car tops out at 1,500 horsepower. If you do not understand horsepower and car engines, just suffice it to say that 1,500 is a whole lot! It gets you to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds, and it tops out at 261 miles per hour. Can you even imagine going half that fast? No, this is not a car for trips to the grocery store. That is, unless the store is on the other side of a race track. (more…)

A Highly Durable Club That Improves Your Shots

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I always wanted to buy a Callaway forged copper wedge, but didn’t get around to shopping for one until I retired recently. I figured that now that I would be hitting the links two to three times a week, it was time to upgrade my clubs. The old ones I played with for years were looking pretty ratty, and more importantly they were having a negative effect on my game. I bought them about twenty years ago and they are really showing the wear and tear. It was time to upgrade and I decided to start with my wedges.

Wedges are one of the most important clubs you will use in golf, especially if you have the tendency to blunder into every hazard and obstacle on the course. I have long been known as the hazard guy at my club, but I am also good about getting around them with my wedges. That’s why I wanted the copper wedge because these clubs tend to work better than your average wedge that most people would pick up with a standard golf club package. (more…)

Collector’s Club Ring Made with Star Sapphire Gemstones

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I suggested a ring design for our collector’s club. We collect old antique phones, and we wanted to raise money for the club. I am the artist in the group, so I was tasked with coming up with a nice design for the ring. I drew up something that included star sapphire gemstones, and it was voted on. Everyone liked it without wanting any changes. This is kind of unique as we are an eclectic group. Some folks like really old wooden crank phones while others collect rotary models from the forties and fifties. I was kind of surprised that everyone liked my ring design and my choice to use star sapphire for the main gemstone.

The first ring was made as a sample for everyone to see. (more…)

I Found Help in a Way That I Had Not Heard About Before

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

I would say that my headaches had been happening for about a year-and-a-half. What alarmed me about that is that headaches have been mostly been a rarity for me throughout my life. I had no idea that there is a Campbell chiropractor who can help people be free from the same type of chronic headaches if I was dealing with. I thought they only worked with back problems. This is how I got help with my headaches that I was dealing with on a daily basis.

The first time that I had a major headache a year-and-a-half ago, I actually felt like throwing up. The pain was so strong that I immediately started to worry that something was wrong with me. I almost drove myself to the emergency room. First, I called my mom to tell her what was going on. She told me that I was more than likely suffering from a migraine. (more…)

Fantastic Legal Minds Helped Our Family Find Relief

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

Never having to employ the services of an attorney, I had to do a lot of online research to locate just the right personal injury attorney in Sacramento several months ago after my son was attacked by a couple of kids who live down the street. He was coming home from school, minding his own business, when these two thugs jumped him in an attempt to steal his backpack. I didn’t care at all about the items in his bag, but I cared a lot when I saw the extent of his injuries. He had two black eyes, a split lip, a broken nose, and multiple facial contusions.

We called the police, of course, and they quickly rounded up the two goons responsible for the attack, but it wasn’t enough. (more…)

Do Not Ignore Squeaks Coming from Your Dryer

Wednesday, January 11th, 2017

Our dryer started squeaking about a year ago. It was a mild sound that was occasional at first. Then it got more pronounced as time went on. When someone on the phone asked me what the squeaking sound was, I figured it was time to call a place that does appliance repair in Sacramento to fix it. If I let it go any longer, my neighbors might start complaining of the loud squeaking noise coming from our clothes dryer. We had gotten used to hearing it and pretty much ignored it. The clothes still dried just fine, so it was not really a big deal.

However, the squeak was caused by a bad bearing where the drum rotates. This caused a shift in the drum that then wore out the seal between the rotating drum and the frame of the dryer. The bearing was not expensive to replace, and the seal was not too expensive. (more…)

Getting Proof of Income for Workers

Thursday, January 5th, 2017

I have a few people who work for me. I don’t pay them under the table, but I don’t do their taxes either. They are contract workers, which means that they get their full pay from me, and then they handle their taxes on their own. I have my own records, but I had never given them anything like proof of income. I just figured that they would be honest about their own taxes, just as I am honest about mine. However, I was told by a good friend that I should do more to protect myself since I don’t always pay with a check.

If I did pay someone in cash, then that person could say that I gave more or less, or they could even say that I did not pay them. That made sense to me, and I decided to research this so I could definitely protect myself. (more…)

Wallpapers, Lyrics and Songs on This Site

Thursday, October 20th, 2016

My friend knows how much I love music, so it was not surprising when he sent me an email with a link to the Tubidy free music download site. I have loved music ever since I was a kid because my folks always listened to all kinds in the house. I have a rather wide range of genres that I will listen to, which is why I really appreciate it when he sent me that email. There are a lot of music sites that just cater to one type of genre, so I like to go to as many as I can.

When I went to this music site, I was able to see just how different it is from the sites that I normally go to. This one has a lot more available on it than just songs for people to listen to. (more…)

A Car Scanner Makes My Car Perform Better

Saturday, October 15th, 2016

When I first heard about OBD 2 software, I really had no idea what it was. I knew that it was a car scanner, but I was clueless beyond that. I suppose that is because I would always take my car to the mechanic when it needed to be checked for something or just a regular tune up. My brother is the one who told me about the car scanner and how it has really helped in not only save money but have better performance from his car as well.

He gave me the website address for the site where he had learned about it too. Everything I read there really excited me, and I had a feeling I was going to have a better car because of this too. At first, I thought that this was just something that an auto garage would have since they are the ones with all of the diagnostic tools for looking at cars. (more…)

Our Son Got the IPhone He Bought Unlocked by the Carrier

Thursday, October 13th, 2016

Our son was saving to buy a used iPhone. I was very wary about him buying online, so I figured it would be okay to buy one from a friend of his. The friend gets all the latest things, so he was selling his old iPhone. He got a new one because the day they were released they did not have the color in stock that he wanted. Now, a couple of months later, he talked his mom into getting him the black one. Our son got a great deal on a practically new phone, but an iPhone factory unlock was needed to get it to work on our carrier.

I had never heard of such a thing. We have swapped phones around in our family even though we have relatives that use different carriers. It looks like Apple is different. They seem to lock their iPhones to the carrier, and I think it is for two full years. (more…)

The Best Espresso Machine Ever

Tuesday, October 11th, 2016

When my hours at work were cut back, I knew that I had to make some changes. One of the inevitable changes was to not stop every morning for my morning cup of espresso from a local bakery. They make the absolute best espresso, and I knew that I was going to miss it, but I had no choice. Even with this concession, I knew that I would not be able to give up my morning cup altogether. Instead of having it through a drive thru, I decided to buy a Saeco Vienna Plus maker to see if it could even begin to compare.

I did not choose this espresso maker out of thin air. (more…)

Stretch Limo for Prom Dance

Saturday, October 8th, 2016

I know that some people like to rent stretch limousine for the prom dance, and I know that not everyone can afford it. We do not have a lot of extra money to put towards the prom dance, and we have already spent a ton of money on my son’s tuxedo rental and other associated costs. He had to get a haircut, and some new shoes. I am trying to figure out how much it is going to cost us to rent a stretch limo for the prom.

Of course, a stretch limo would be completely overkill if it were just going to be my son and his prom date that were going to ride in the limo. But that is not the case, and it is the key to making this affordable. (more…)
