We Found a Little Summer House

Monday, May 22nd, 2017

The place is on the inlet between Destin Beach and the town of Niceville. It is not exactly on the beach, but then that is fine with me. I would really rather be protected from a real storm surge. The place is nothing more than a cottage and there are about another half dozen of them quite close to it. They seem to be around ten or fifteen years old and it is obvious that all of them are used like we would use them. Right now we are getting quotes on homeowners insurance in Florida, looking to see what it would cost for us to have it either bundled with the mortgage payment or if we got it separate from that. The place is not going to be that expensive and obviously it helps us that we have paid off our own house. In truth we are thinking that it shall not be very long before it is time for us to get a smaller place.

The last of the children are going to be gone in a short time. (more…)

The Rain is Not Going to Stop Soon

Sunday, May 21st, 2017

It has been pretty much a monsoon since we got here and so we have not been able to get started on this project. All of my stuff is still waiting to be unpacked. There are four of us living in this house in a nice suburb. All of the stuff we brought along is in this sewa mobil box for Jakarta that we hired. That was a good thing, since we can not get the gear out of the box until we need to use it. Of course we are really worried about it. The stuff that we have in that box is very expensive obviously and the company would have a fit if it went missing on us. However the real thing is that we could not replace it in a reasonable amount of time and it might set this project back for a month while we had to sit around waiting for the stuff to get here.

The rain is not supposed to stop or even slow down for another week, but that is not certain either. (more…)

I Wanted to Get Life Insurance

Friday, May 19th, 2017

When my cousin was diagnosed with cancer, none of us expected her to only live for a few more months. She died right before her 40th birthday, which still shocks all of us to this day. She was the picture of health, so she had never taken out life insurance for herself. As a result, her husband has been struggling since half the income was lost. That got me to thinking not long ago that this story could happen to any one of us. I have my car insurance through the Niceville insurance agency, and I decided to talk with someone there about life insurance too.

Before I did, I went to their website to make sure that they even offered life insurance. When I found out that they did, I took my time reading all of the information about it. (more…)

Sometimes You Need to Learn What You Don’t Already Know

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017

People are always saying that there are employees who are natural born leaders. I have heard this all throughout life, but what frustrates me is that it is always held up to everyone as the only people worth anything are leaders. In the company I work for, I have never been a manager, and I know the people who make the most money hold those positions. I began reading leadership blogs to try to learn more about what it is that is necessary to lead others. I hoped that maybe some of it would rub off on me so that I could get a coveted management position one day.

I was never someone who likes to follow or lead. I just like to be myself. I always found it stressful to try to tell other people to do, and while I listen to others in the workplace, I also like to do things on my own. But this is not enough to make your paycheck rise to acceptable levels for today’s costs of living. I knew that I needed to do something if I wanted to rise up the ladder with the company that I have been at for so long. (more…)

The Only Way to Go with a Rug

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017

Until I discovered the wonders of custom designer rugs, I bought all my rugs at the local department store just like everyone else. I figured what is the big deal? They’re rugs. No one notices what type of rugs you’ve got inside the door or in the bathroom. They are all the same. How wrong I was. What if I was to tell you the difference between a custom rug and a mass produced rug was like the difference between night and day? It really is. You haven’t owned a decent rug until you’ve gone custom. They’re that superior.

Of course, buying anything that is custom tends to get a little pricey. I think everyone knows that. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a quality product without spending a bundle of money. (more…)

A Workout Designed to Be Tough

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I joined the local gym because I wanted to get in even better shape. I was not overweight, but I also wasn’t toned. Working out at the gym helped me some, but I was not pleased with the slow progress. The gym had state of the art equipment, but there was no direction really. No personal trainers were on site to help those of us who were not getting to where we wanted to be. Another guy at the gym told me about a Body Beast review that he had read, and he thought I might be interested in it after hearing me complain about my lack of progress.

I asked him if he was doing it, and he was up front about it being too hard for him to stick with it. (more…)

High-End Car Really Grabbed the Attention of My Imagination

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I am not likely to ever be able to own one, but the really top-end cars hold an interest to me. For example, it would be really cool to own a 2017 Bugatti. This car tops out at 1,500 horsepower. If you do not understand horsepower and car engines, just suffice it to say that 1,500 is a whole lot! It gets you to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds, and it tops out at 261 miles per hour. Can you even imagine going half that fast? No, this is not a car for trips to the grocery store. That is, unless the store is on the other side of a race track. (more…)

A Highly Durable Club That Improves Your Shots

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I always wanted to buy a Callaway forged copper wedge, but didn’t get around to shopping for one until I retired recently. I figured that now that I would be hitting the links two to three times a week, it was time to upgrade my clubs. The old ones I played with for years were looking pretty ratty, and more importantly they were having a negative effect on my game. I bought them about twenty years ago and they are really showing the wear and tear. It was time to upgrade and I decided to start with my wedges.

Wedges are one of the most important clubs you will use in golf, especially if you have the tendency to blunder into every hazard and obstacle on the course. I have long been known as the hazard guy at my club, but I am also good about getting around them with my wedges. That’s why I wanted the copper wedge because these clubs tend to work better than your average wedge that most people would pick up with a standard golf club package. (more…)

Collector’s Club Ring Made with Star Sapphire Gemstones

Friday, May 12th, 2017

I suggested a ring design for our collector’s club. We collect old antique phones, and we wanted to raise money for the club. I am the artist in the group, so I was tasked with coming up with a nice design for the ring. I drew up something that included star sapphire gemstones, and it was voted on. Everyone liked it without wanting any changes. This is kind of unique as we are an eclectic group. Some folks like really old wooden crank phones while others collect rotary models from the forties and fifties. I was kind of surprised that everyone liked my ring design and my choice to use star sapphire for the main gemstone.

The first ring was made as a sample for everyone to see. (more…)
